This homeowner had just finished with a construction project that destroyed her back garden when she got in touch with me. She added a cottage to her property in which her Mom now lives, and while the new structure is wonderful, what it and the main house looked out onto was a big pile of mud. They were feeling overwhelmed, and didn’t know where to start.

I was asked to come up with a garden design that married the desires of both the homeowner and her Mom (both keen gardeners), and allowed for both quiet moments and large family gatherings with yard games. Both of them enjoy gardening, and were looking for not just something beautiful, but also food production, and additional shelter in an exposed lot. The designs I came up with work around an existing patio & sump pit, and feature a pergola, a fruit corridor, and lots of ornamental plantings for year-round interest.

With a modest budget to start they first worked to get the pergola and hardscaping in place, and will be adding to the planting over the next couple of years. Featured plants in this garden include lilacs, spirea, hardy geranium, euphorbia, peony, heuchera, aster, lupine, lavender, and ground covers to knit it all together.
