After (Design Concepts)

Full disclosure, these clients are my beloved neighbors! They recently completely renovated their home, and in the process built an ADU in their back garden. It has its own entrance, along a path on the side of their house. It also has windows that look out into the back garden where they like to enjoy meals as a family. Like anyone who has been through a big home construction project knows, it’s not gentle on your garden. With the exception of a bit of their front garden near the sidewalk, everything else had been demolished, so we got to start with a pretty blank slate.
With growing kids at home & busy careers, they don’t have too much time to spend on the garden, and use a local landscape maintenance firm to do a monthly cleanup. But they wanted a space that would not only be beautiful and functional for them, but also for their ADU renters.
Creating privacy in the back garden was important, as was fitting in some storage in an increasingly limited space. They planted a few trees as was required by the city, but it will be some time until they mature enough to provide shade & privacy. They also put in a temporary path of urbanite to the ADU entrance until the new garden design is implemented.
