Having recently moved into this house in retirement, the homeowners relished the manageable size of their garden, and that it was all on one level, but wanted something with more exuberance & personality. The home had recently undergone renovations, including in the back garden, where a beautiful covered pergola was added with a fireplace, and an adjacent hot tub/water feature. But part of the back garden was also astroturf (!) and some of the existing planting was suffering.
Working to create a cohesive experience throughout the front & back, I designed spaces that would be enjoyed throughout the seasons, bringing lots of color into the space and removing the real & fake grass.
One of the homeowners is a keen gardener, but didn’t want too much maintenance as they often travel and spend time with family. The plantings are rich and varied, with an emphasis on including natives in the back for wildlife.
They needed to be able to handle the overflow from a downspout extension into the sidewalk garden, so I also included a shallow bioswale that can fill with water in the rainy months, and act as an extension of a traversal path throughout the year.
